The Swansea Patriots

Our Beginnings

The Swansea Patriots came into being to recognize the 1986 centennial of the Village of Swansea. The first meeting to prepare for this occasion took place in 1984. A variety of events and happenings comprised the centennial festivities including a parade and picnic. Various organizations in the Village and the governmental staff combined efforts to make this an outstanding and successful commemoration.

The Patriots organization determined to commit all money raised to the Swansea parks, in particular for purchasing the land for Melvin Price Memorial Park from St. Clair County. Once this land was purchased, improvements and equipment would be forthcoming. A second picnic, “The Centennial Plus One” was held the following year. The organization’s membership, however, was not large enough to sustain the fundraising at a picnic, so the first Camelot Auction was held in 1988. A tour of Melvin Price Memorial Park today illustrates the success of the Swansea Patriots’ endeavors. Monies raised by the Patriots have been employed to develop baseball, soccer, and football areas, a rollerblade rink, playgrounds, a walking trail, pavilions, and two facilities for group meetings and events. Landscaping enhances opportunities for recreation and relaxation. This is also a memorial park, a place to reflect and meditate, as well as have fun.
